ABSTRACT

POETIC AND PROPHETIC LIFE IN A TIME OF THE HIDDEN GOD:

A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF THOMAS MERTON’S AND

YUN DONG-JU’S SPIRITUALITIES

By Hyeokil Kwon

This dissertation starts with the urgent question “What is an authentic Christian life in a time of the hidden God?” There are various forms of God’s hiddenness in biblical stories and human experience, and many contemporary people, who live in post-Christian societies and are in unexplainable sufferings, experience God’s silence or absence. To find an answer, this dissertation inquires into the literary works by two Christian poets, who lived in their respective time of the hidden God, from the perspective of poetic and prophetic spirituality.

First, Thomas Merton (1915-1968) was a monk and poet who devoted himself to living out and developing the monastic heritage deeply rooted in the contemplative experience of God through his life and writings in ways relevant to his own time after passing through his wrestling with the hidden God. Second, Yun Dong-ju (1917-1945) was a Korean diaspora poet and member of the intelligentsia, who lamented the tragic sorrows of his contemporaries in the dark age of Japanese colonial period and struggled to find hope for a new era by writing and sharing his poetry, which contains the traces of his spiritual awakening and wrestling with the hidden God.

The two poets were disciples of Christ who saw the hidden reality through their poetic and contemplative intuition and were moved to prophesy against the dominant consciousness and power of the world. Based on the lives and writings of these two poets, it can be said that an authentic Christian life in a time of the hidden God requires a poetic and prophetic spirituality that contemplates God and the self in one’s everyday reality and seeks a fundamental inner transformation of people and their society in the hope for a new epoch. This is a life radically devoted to discipleship in imitation of Christ.
