[번역] 윤동주의 〈참회록〉

오래 전  '서정시'에 관한 수업을 들으며 윤동주 시인의 시를 미국학생들과 함께 읽을 기회를 갖게 되었다. 그동안 윤동주의 시가 여러 분들에 의해 영어로 번역되었지만, 주로 의역되었고 최근의 원전연구를 통해 본문이 확정되기 전에 번역된 것들이라, 원문의 의미에 충실하지 못하다고 생각되어, 부족하지만 몇 편을 영어로 번역했다. 한글 원전은 윤동주 저, 홍장학 편, 《정본 윤동주 전집》 (서울: 문학과 지성사, 2004)에서 가져왔다.

참회록*
 

파란 녹이 낀 구리 거울 속에

내 얼굴이 남아 있는 것은

어느 왕조의 유물이기에

이다지도 욕될까. 

나는 나의 참회의 글을 한 줄에 줄이자.

— 만 이십사 년 일 개월을
    무슨 기쁨을 바라 살아왔던가
 
내일이나 모레나 그 어느 즐거운 날에

나는 또 한 줄의 참회록을 써야 한다.

— 그때 그 젊은 나이에
    왜 그런 부끄런 고백을 했던가.
 
밤이면 밤마다 나의 거울을

손바닥으로 발바닥으로 닦아보자. 

 

그러면 어느 운석(隕石) 밑으로 홀로 걸어가는

슬픈 사람의 뒷모양이

거울 속에 나타나 온다.

Confessions*
 

  
That in the blue rusty copper mirror
there remains my face
is so much shameful;
what dynasty’s relic is it?
 
Let me curtail my writings of penitence into one line.
— For twenty-four years and one month,
     what joy have I longed for in my life?
 
Tomorrow, the day after, or on a some joyful day
I have to write again a line of confession.
— Why, at the young age,
     did I make such a shameful confession?
 
Night after night let me wipe my mirror
with the palm of my hand, with the sole of my foot.
 
Then, a sad person’s back
who walks alone under a meteorite
becomes to appear.

* The title of this poem, “참회록” [cham-hoe-rok], literally means a “record of penitence.”
