[번역] 윤동주의 〈서시〉

오래 전  '서정시'에 관한 수업을 들으며 윤동주 시인의 시를 미국학생들과 함께 읽을 기회를 갖게 되었다. 그동안 윤동주의 시가 여러 분들에 의해 영어로 번역되었지만, 주로 의역되었고 최근의 원전연구를 통해 본문이 확정되기 전에 번역된 것들이라, 원문의 의미에 충실하지 못하다고 생각되어, 부족하지만 몇 편을 영어로 번역했다. 한글 원전은 윤동주 저, 홍장학 편, 《정본 윤동주 전집》 (서울: 문학과 지성사, 2004)에서 가져왔다.

서시(序詩)* 

 

 

죽는 날까지 하늘을 우러러
한 점 부끄럼이 없기를,
잎새에 이는 바람에도
나는 괴로워했다.
별을 노래하는 마음으로
모든 죽어가는 것을 사랑해야지
그리고 나한테 주어진 길을 걸어가야겠다. 

오늘 밤에도 별이 바람에 스치운다.

Until the day of death, looking up to the sky,
hope there isn’t a dot of shame,
I have been tormented
even by the wind rising between the leaves.
With a heart sings of a star
I shall love all things dying.
And I shall walk
the road given to me.
 
Tonight, again, the star is grazed by the wind.

Yun Dong-Ju placed this poem, instead of a forward, on the back of the front cover of his collection of poems, the Sky, Wind, Star, and Poem [하늘과 바람과 별과 시], which he intended to publish in commemoration of his college graduation.
